The Assure® ID Insulin Safety Syringe (6mm) is designed to protect both you and your patients while delivering patient comfort and an effective subcutaneous insulin injection with a shorter needle. Research indicates shorter needles are acceptable for people of all ages and body types.1

Instructions for Use: Assure® ID DUO-Shield Safety Pen Needles

Before injection, consult the pen injector device manual for proper use and control of insulin flow. If you are using for the first time and have questions, please contact your physician or healthcare professional.

Attaching the needle to the pen injection device

Step 1

Remove the seal from the safety pen needle by peeling back carefully and discard.

For your safety

  • Once the seal is removed, do not place fingers on the back end of the needle to avoid a needle stick.
  • Do not remove the ClearPrime safety shield from the safety pen needle until instructed to do so.

Step 2

Gently push the pen injection device in and against the red safety shield on the pen-connection end of the needle and twist closckwise until attached securely.

For your safety

  • Do not remove the ClearPrime safety shield as it serves as a safety shield to prevent a needle stick before injection. The cover should remain intact until ready to inject.

Priming the pen injection device

Step 3

Prime the pen injection device according to the instructions for the pen injection device. Note: you can see the priming drops through the ClearPrime safety shield.

For your safety

  • Do not remove the ClearPrime safety shield as it serves as a safety shield to prevent a needle stick before injection. The cover should remain intact until ready to inject and during transportation to the patient’s side.

Performing the injection

Step 4

When you are by the patient and ready to inject, remove the ClearPrime safety shield from the safety pen needle to expose the needle.

For your safety

  • Do not place your fingers on the front end of the needle to avoid a needle stick.

Step 5

Inject into the skin as recommended by your physician with or without a skin lift.

For your safety

  • Do not place your fingers on the front end of the needle to avoid a needle stick.

Step 6

Hold the injection for 5 to 10 seconds before withdrawing from the injection site as recommended by your physician to ensure delivery of the full dose and to prevent leakage of medication.

Step 7

Remove the needle from the injection site by lifting straight up from the injection site. The patient-end safety mechanism is activated automatically when needle is withdrawn from the skin.

For your safety

  • Do not remove the needle at an angle.
  • The automatic patient-end safety shield will engage and cover the shielded needle when you lift the pen injection device from the patient’s skin.
  • Do not place fingers on the front end of the needle to prevent a needle stick.
  • Do not twist on the safety shield at any time.

Step 8

Attach the clear cover securely over the patient-end safety shield by pushing the cover over the shielded needle and white barrel.

For your safety

  • Do not grasp or twist on the colored patient-end safety shield (purple–5mm and turquoise–8mm) or the lower white barrel of the safety pen needle at any time to prevent damage to the safety mechanism and to prevent a needle stick.
  • Do not remove the needle before placing the cover back on the shielded needle.

Step 9

Remove the safety pen needle from the pen injector device by twisting counter-clockwise with your fingers on the clear cover. The pen connection-end safety shield will automatically engage when removed to assist in needlestick prevention. Dispose of in a sharps container.

  • The automatic pen connection-end safety mechanism will engage and cover the shielded needle when removed from the pen injector device.
  • Do not grasp the needle by the back end at any time to prevent a needle stick.

Step 3

Prime the pen injection device according to the instructions for the pen injection device. Note: you can see the priming drops through the ClearPrime safety shield.

Instructions for Use: Safety Insulin Syringes

 
  1. Peel package as indicated to allow proper removal of Assure® ID Insulin Safety Syringe with fixed needle, and remove cap.
  2. Prepare vial for medication draw up.
  3. Penetrate center of vial with needle and draw up desired dose of medication. (Figure 1)
  4. Extend safety shield forward to fully cover needle and hear an audible click. This ensures the safety shield is ready for safe transportation to patient site. To give injection, retract safety shield until it snaps into its original position. (Figure 2 *For safe transportation option.)
  5. Perform administer medication according to your facility's established protocol. (Figure 3)
  6. Immediately following injection, extend safety shield forward fully until click is heard. Next, to lock safety shield, twist in either direction until you feel the positive stop and hear an audible click. (Figure 4)
